My nephew Kenta, who recently turned 15, came to Tokyo from our small town. For the past week, I had been trying to convince my uncle in Tokyo to stay overnight at my house. However, when I asked him why he had suddenly come to Tokyo, he replied, “Actually, my uncle, I need to undergo a circumcision surgery at a famous clinic in Tokyo.”
I was taken aback by his response. I had never thought of my uncle as someone who needed to get circumcised. In fact, I had always assumed that he was intact. But I didn’t want to pry into his personal life, so I just nodded and said, “Okay, no problem. We’ll make it work.”
Kenta stayed with us for the next few days, and I did my best to make him feel comfortable. I took him out to eat at his favorite restaurants, showed him around the city, and even took him to a baseball game. But I couldn’t help but feel a little guilty for not asking him more about his circumcision.
