The day started like any other for Mary. She woke up, got dressed, and made breakfast for her husband, who was absent from work for the past two years due to terminal cancer. She didn’t know what to do with herself, and her days felt empty without him by her side.
As she sat at the kitchen table, waiting for her husband to wake up, she heard a knock at the door. It was her neighbor, a woman she didn’t know very well. “Mary, is that you?” the neighbor asked, her voice shaking. “I’m so sorry to bother you, but my husband and I have a big fight and I don’t know what to do. Can you help me?”
Mary looked up from her breakfast and saw the woman standing in the doorway, her eyes filled with tears. She got up from her seat and went to her. “Of course, come in,” she said, her own eyes welling up with tears.
