deteriorated suddenly and he was now on the verge of death. As he lay in his bed, Mamiya could feel the fear of death creeping up on him. He had always been a quiet and reserved person, but now he was consumed with the thought of leaving this world without having experienced anything worth remembering.
As Mamiya lay there, he could hear the sounds of the hospital around him. He could hear the footsteps of the doctors and nurses as they walked down the hallways, the beeping of the monitors and the sound of the machines. But above all of this, he could hear the sound of his own breathing. It was fast and shallow, like the sound of a dying animal.
As Mika was checking on him, Mamiya could see the desire in her eyes. He could see the way she looked at him, the way she smiled at him. And he knew that she felt the same way about him.
